Arenal Volcano Tour, Costa Rica: Rumble in the Jungle
If you love volcanoes, you’ll love Arenal. If you’re afraid of volcanoes, you’ll love Arenal. Costa Rica’s most active volcano rumbles, hisses, and fumes, but it’s a gentle giant. Arenal poses little danger to timid tourists, as long as they stay out of its way.
Arenal lay dormant for 400 years, until an earthquake awakened it in 1968. The volcano destroyed the town of Arenal, the residents fled, and the government declared the area a national park. Today, tourists can enjoy nearby Lake Arenal, hot springs, birding, and volcano-watching from the safety of their lodges.
