It’s 1937. America is in the depths of the Great Depression. People need hope, they need food, they need jobs. San Francisco needs a tourist landmark. The Golden Gate Bridge is the answer. The San Francisco Chronicle hailed it as the “35 million dollar steel harp.” That’s over $1 billion in today’s dollars, give or take a few million. The Golden Gate Bridge may not be the longest suspension bridge, and it may not even be golden (it’s international orange), but to many, it remains the most beautiful bridge in the world.
